Explorations and Experiments on the Use of Auditory and Visual Feedback in Pen-Gesture Interfaces

چکیده
We explore the use of auditory feedback in pen gesture interfaces in a series of informal and formal experiments. Initial iterative studies showed that gaining performance or learning advantage with auditory feedback beyond the obvious is difficult. To establish a baseline, Experiment 1 formally evaluated gesture production accuracy as a function of auditory and visual feedback. Size of gestures and the aperture of the closed gesture were influenced by the visual or auditory feedback, while most other features were not. Design implications from this experiment were taken in developing a revised form of EdgeWrite that was proved successful. Experiment 2 focused on the emotional and aesthetic aspects of auditory feedback in pen-gesture interfaces. Participants' views with regard to the dimension of being wonderful and stimulating was significantly higher with musical feedback. Our exploration points to several general rules of auditory feedback that may serve as a foundation for future research and development. Author

Ph.D. Dissertation Interaction with Sound and Pre-Recorded Music: Novel Interfaces and Use Patterns
Computers are changing the way sound and recorded music are listened to and used. The use of computers to playback music makes it possible to change and adapt music to different usage situations in ways that were not possible with analog sound equipment. In this thesis, interaction with pre-recorded music is investigated using prototypes and user studies. First, different interfaces for browsin...

متن کاملThe Effect of Asynchronous versus Computer-mediated Corrective Feedback on the Correct Use of English Articles in an EFL Context
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of asynchronous computer-mediated versus conventional corrective feedback on learners' writing accuracy. Three groups of learners took part in the study: asynchronous feedback group, conventional feedback group, and a control group. Asynchronous feedback group students received explicit feedback on the targeted structure via e-mail, while...
متن کاملAn Investigation of Adaptive Pen Pressure Discretization Method Based on Personal Pen Pressure Use Profile
SUMMARY Continuous pen pressure can be used to operate multi-state widgets such as menus in pen based user interfaces. The number of levels into which the pen pressure space is divided determines the number of states in the multi-state widgets. To increase the optimal number of divisions of the pen pressure space and achieve greater pen pressure usabil-ity, we propose a new discretization metho...
